In the world of wine at the moment, the big money is in the Chinese market. The nouveau riche visiting Hong Kong auction houses are buying famous French Wine at record auction prices, most often simply so they can make a statement about their earnings and financial clout. Hong Kong has specifically made itself Asia’s wine capital by cutting customs duty on wine, which has attracted people from around the world looking to exploit an enthusiastic market in the world’s most populous nation.
So what of India? Only slightly behind China’s precedent, and only slightly less populous, India is considering opening up its import system to allow foreign wines to flow in more easily. A 150% tariff on imported wine is currently in place, along with a 4% extra additional duty (which sounds amusing in itself). Then each state passes its own tax in addition to that. Yet, India is showing increasing interest in importing wines, especially from the European Union, who it is currently in negotiations with.

Finding a luxury gift basket in Sonoma isn’t difficult, but finding the right one can be because there are simply put, so many choices. One of our favorite wineries to include in such a gift basket is Unti Vineyards, which is a family owned and operated winery which has been growing grapes and making fine wine since the start of the 1990′s. With organic farming methods, estate fruit and a small (ish) production of around seven thousand cases per year, this is a great winery for those who love to find rising wine stars before their friends and family. The family made it’s money in the grocery business, helping Safeway to become a significant player in the national wine market, making it one of the first grocery store chains to take that step. The focus of the winery has been and continues to be Zinfandel, which makes sense given the Alexander Valley location.

In this day and age, it seems that almost anyone can make the Guinness World Record Book for an unusual activity. It is probably safe to say that when you bought your last cigar humidor or round of cigars, your cigar humidor plans did not include creating a world record. That is exactly what happened to the infamous gentleman juggler, Kris Kremo. After removing his cigars from their boxes and placing them in his cigar humidor, he began looking for an interesting use for the leftover cigar boxes. In 1977, he set a Guinness World Record by throwing a cigar box into the air, performing a quadruple pirouette, and catching the box. However, his cigar humidor plans for conquest were interrupted by Kristian Kristoff, in 1994, when Kristoff was able to throw three cigar boxes in the air, perform the quadruple pirouette, and catch all three boxes. Next time you place your cigars in your cigar humidor, don’t just throw out those empty boxes: Get creative!
